Autumn Hiking in Austria

Autumn Hiking around Maria Alm

When the days become clearer and the forests around Maria Alm slowly turn golden, one of the most beautiful seasons for hiking begins at Hochkönig. Pleasant temperatures, far-reaching views and quieter trails make autumn ideal for leisurely walks as well as panoramic mountain hikes.

From die HOCHKÖNIGIN, you can head straight outside and into nature. Around Maria Alm am Hochkönig, you will find easy trails, family-friendly routes and more challenging hikes with views of the Steinerne Meer. Whether you are travelling as a couple, with children or looking for a more active day in the mountains, autumn hiking in the Austrian Alps can be tailored to your fitness level, the weather and your appetite for altitude.

As conditions in the mountains can change more quickly in autumn, we have put together our hiking tips for September, October and late autumn on this page – including suggested routes and useful information for planning your time on the trails.

Why autumn hiking feels so good: Clearer Views. Quieter Trails. Just the Right Temperature. - Wellnesshotel die HOCHKÖNIGIN

Why autumn hiking feels so good

Clearer Views. Quieter Trails. Just the Right Temperature.

In September and October, the Hochkönig hiking region shows a different side of itself than in midsummer. The air is often clearer, visibility stretches further and the trails become quieter. At the same time, temperatures are usually pleasant for longer hikes and tours with more elevation gain.

For leisure hikers and couples, this means relaxed hours outdoors with plenty of time to stop along the way. Families will find short walks and easy hikes around Maria Alm that can be adapted to fitness levels and the day’s conditions. And those looking for a more active challenge can make the most of stable autumn days for longer mountain hikes and greater elevation gains.

That variety is exactly what makes autumn hiking at the Hochkönig so appealing: it is not the season that decides the route, but the weather, your mood and your fitness level.

our autumn hiking tips

Three Hikes. Three Ways to Experience the Hochkönig.

Not every hiking day needs the same goal. Sometimes it can be a longer mountain tour, sometimes it is all about the views – and sometimes the best hike is the one that starts right outside the hotel. These three tours around Maria Alm are among our favourites for September and October.

1. Ahornstein – for a proper day in the mountains
For guests with a good level of fitness who want to spend several hours in the mountains. The Ahornstein combines a longer ascent with sweeping views across the region and is particularly rewarding on stable, clear autumn days.

Ideal for: active hikers & couples
Character: challenging, scenic mountain hike
Our tip: Don’t squeeze this one between two other activities – give it a full day.

2. Hochkeil – for panoramic views and autumn scenery
The panoramic hike around Hochkeil is our recommendation for anyone who wants impressive views without collecting too many metres of elevation. In September and October, the clear air, low sun and open views of the Hochkönig massif make this tour especially rewarding.

Ideal for: leisure hikers, couples & photographers
Character: panoramic and scenic rather than challenging
Our tip: Choose a clear day after a cool night – visibility is often at its best.

3. Natrun & Prinzensee – straight from the HOCHKÖNIGIN
You can even leave the car at the hotel for this one. The tour up the Natrun starts directly at the HOCHKÖNIGIN. If you prefer a more leisurely walk or are hiking with children, you can use the Natrunbahn while it is operating and continue from the top to Prinzensee.

Ideal for: families, leisure hikers & your first day on holiday
Character: flexible and easy-going
Our tip: Walk up or take the cable car depending on your fitness and mood – the destination stays the same.

well prepared for autumn hiking

What to Know in September, October and November

Autumn days at the Hochkönig can be wonderfully clear and mild – but conditions in the mountains can also change quickly. As elevation increases, cooler temperatures or even the first snowfall are possible, while the days gradually become shorter. Routes, elevation gain and walking times should therefore always be adapted to the current weather conditions and your own experience.

Sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing and protection from rain and cold
belong in your backpack at this time of year. Before setting off, it is also worth checking the latest weather forecast and operating times of the mountain lifts. Especially later in autumn, not all mountain huts, lifts and cable cars remain open.

And if you are deciding between two routes? Our team knows the region well and will be happy to help you find a hike that suits the weather, the time available and your fitness level.

frequently asked questions about autumn hiking

Good to Know for Your Hiking Days at the Hochkönig

Yes. September and October are particularly beautiful months for hiking around Maria Alm. Pleasant temperatures, often clear views and quieter trails provide excellent conditions. In October, however, the weather, elevation and shorter daylight hours should be taken into account more carefully when planning your route.
Natrun and Prinzensee are a particularly flexible option for families. The hike can be started directly from the HOCHKÖNIGIN and, depending on operating times, combined with the Natrunbahn. This makes it easy to adapt the route to the children’s age, fitness level and the day’s conditions.
Yes. Several walking and hiking routes start in the immediate surroundings of the hotel. One particularly easy option is the route up the Natrun towards Prinzensee, with no need to drive anywhere first.
Weather and temperatures in the mountains can change quickly in autumn. Sturdy hiking shoes, weatherproof clothing and realistic route planning are therefore essential. Before setting off, you should also check the latest trail conditions and the opening times of cable cars, mountain huts and alpine pastures.
